This is an absolutely wonderful rare OLD Hand Carved wooden Dowitcher Shorebird with painted copper legs and feet. It is in old original paint and is in the preening position set on a small oak base with the words "Dowitcher 1963" written in fading pencil. It has glass eyes and is in wonderful form and great style. This is by far the nicest Shorebird I have ever owned.
The previous owner had it listed as being attributed to Lloyd Sterling of Crisfield Maryland. Lloyd and the Sterling family were very famous working decoy makers and the Sterling Family decoys are collected very aggressively today. They also made verious Miniatures and shorebirds for the shelf. In estimating who carved decoys, an attribution is simply a "best guess" because the carver and anyone who personally knew the carver have long passed.
It is 7 1/2 inches tall from the bottom of the base to the top of the head x 6 1/4 inches wide from the breast to the tip of the tail.
