This is a fantastic piece of American Fur trade History. It is a Native American Trade Knife with a handle carved into the shape of a Deers Leg/hoof. It was a common practice among the Indians to have effigies of animals. I have owned a mid 1800s Catlinite Deer Leg pipe and presently own a prehistoric steatite Deer hoof personal pipe.
This Knife has the original skinning blade along with Lead inlay in the handle. it shows signs of old sharpening and the blade tip is blunt from use. It has scratches and a chip on the Hoof end of the knife as well as use marks overall, but it is one of the nicest original trade knives I have ever owned form this period in history.
The knife is approx. 12 1/2 inches overall with a 7 1/4 inch blade.
